Kitchen Cabinet Installation a level, measure up from the floor to different points on the wall where you plan to place cabinets. Check that each one is flat and level to the floor, and mark it on your drawing as a reference point. Note any obstructions like vents, switches, plumbing or electric lines that need to pass through the cabinetry. If you don’t know where these are located, mark blockage on the wall with a pencil.

Locate the studs with a stud finder, then mark their locations on the back of each cabinet so you can screw into them for a secure, strong connection. If the studs are far apart, you will need to use filler strips to join the cabinet frames.

Start installing your upper cabinets first, taking care to even the faces of each cabinet and shim them as needed to make them plumb. Screw the first cabinet to the wall, but only tighten it enough to hold it in place temporarily. Screw it to the studs, then put on a second cabinet next to it, making sure they are aligned and that their faces and edges are even. Clamp them together, then screw them both to the wall and to each other, tightening just enough to hold them in place.

Check the first cabinet for a high spot by placing a level against the wall vertically and watching for a plumb level or nothing sticking out from top to bottom. Shim the high point as necessary to ensure that your cabinets will be plumb and level across the whole room.
